It's almost the end of the first month of winter~ and yes, I'm actually feeling sad that winter is slowly passing by because winter is so beautiful. So we had a few days of heavy rain, but afterwards, like today, the sun comes out and it's not stinking hot, but cool breezes and clear blue skies. One of the reasons why Sydney is truly so beautiful.

It's hard to find time to just chill and relax these days, and slowly my Sundays are getting taken up as well =( but I guess with life, just take it as it comes, enjoy time off when it comes, and work when work comes.

Amidst a flurry of placement, work and appointments to catch up with friends, one has to find time to sit in a cosy cafe for some brunch (bacon) and good coffee.

Recently, Sydney Morning Herald sold a "Good Cafe Guide 2011" along with its newspaper. It's the green covered book from previous entry. In it are lists of cafes that serves good quality coffee, or good breakfasts, or simply known for its friendly service and cafe life.

At FourAteFive cafe (485 Crown Street, Surry Hills), there seemed to be a queue constantly, and we had to wait for a table, which took about 15 minutes. No worries, there were plenty of quirky shops nearby to be explored, and since it's at Surry Hills- a place I don't often visit, it's always nice to check out other cafes around the block. Did I mention Mohr Fish is also close by? I was sorely tempted to skip waiting on 485 and go there instead for some fish and chips with that delicious tartare sauce that they make on the premises.

I digress. So we managed to get seats. By seats, I don't mean a table. 485 is known for its cafe life, so it's quite interesting that we were placed at a communal table. We shared a huge wooden table with about 10 other people, so it was all cosy and snug for them, but me? Got the head of the table :D

My FW, pretty good~

And a pot of Chai with honey... and something else, I forgot. Came with a sieve, and the taste? Great! Lots of spice in it and you can tell they use the real stuff, not powder, and it has a distinct gingery kick.
Wait, I've completely missed out the description of the breakfast items... let's see, I ordered a Gruyère cheese and smoked salmon sandwich (it was meant to be smoked ham, but I prefer my salmon), and the other one was... something similar, ricotta cheese, poached eggs, topped with EXTRA BACON. I love bacon. I don't think I can ever quit eating bacon even if you bribed me with a deluxe Kobe Jones dinner.
Conclusion? Definitely has a good cafe life to it, lots of queues, lots of people chatting, coffee grinder going on in the background like a cd on repeat. Communal table was interesting for a cafe, the only other time I sat in one was at Menya. Service was OK (ps to the guys and girls: the waiters and waitresses are pretty cute, though whether they are taken is another thing...), food was actually pretty normal for a cafe, though I saw some people ordering some interesting things like the Mexican breakfast or the pot pie (huge thing).
Not sure if I'll go back though. It is out at Surry Hills plus waiting time... for someone impatient like me... hrm...

Then we went to Glebe, where I went crazy over the discounted books and second hand sheet music stores. I managed to get this book which a guest lecturer recommended the class before... it was at the shop window for $13. Not sure how much it usually cost, but grabbed it since it was convenient. The previous owner was most definitely a smoker, I could smell this whiff of tobacco each time I flip a page... shall have to disinfect it with methylated spirit.

Hopped into this cute looking cafe called the Elizabeth's Boutique Cafe just for a quick snack after all the walking.

Bruschetta!
I don't actually remember the menus of the places I visit very well... especially when it comes to names of cheeses and Italian sounding food. Half the time, I don't even know what I'm ordering... but that's the point of trying out new things. So far, I haven't picked out some unknown dish that tastes terrible. Yet. Fingers crossed it won't happen.
Will tomorrow be another chill and relax day?

Glad to hear Sunday's are still relaxing for you. I recently went to that cafe and didn't get to chat up the waitress. Too early for alcohol. Also, didn't want the continuous nagging. Bacon is bad for you. It's worth getting to see a Kobe Jones offer to quit bacon!
Ohhhh.. you just gave your identity away =P I was wondering who this anonymous was. You didn't get to chat up the waitress not because you didn't drink, but because the guy next to you caught her attention :P
